    Characterisation of host growth after infection with a broad-range freshwater cyanopodophage

    Freshwater cyanophages are poorly characterised in comparison to their marine counterparts, however, the level of genetic diversity that exists in freshwater cyanophage communities is likely to exceed that found in marine environments, due to the habitat heterogeneity within freshwater systems. Many cyanophages are specialists, infecting a single host species or strain; however, some are less fastidious and infect a number of different host genotypes within the same species or even hosts from different genera. Few instances of host growth characterisation after infection by broad host-range phages have been described. Here we provide an initial characterisation of interactions between a cyanophage isolated from a freshwater fishing lake in the south of England and its hosts. Designated ΦMHI42, the phage is able to infect isolates from two genera of freshwater cyanobacteria, Planktothrix and Microcystis. Transmission Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy indicate that ΦMHI42 is a member of the Podoviridae, albeit with a larger than expected capsid. The kinetics of host growth after infection with ΦMHI42 differed across host genera, species and strains in a way that was not related to the growth rate of the uninfected host.     Enigmas from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 Kleinman White Dwarf Catalog

    We report results from a continuation of our searches for high field magnetic white dwarfs paired in a detached binary with non degenerate companions. We made use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 catalog of Kleinman et al. (2013) with 19,712 spectroscopically-identified white dwarfs. These include 1,735 white dwarf plus M dwarf detached pairs (almost 10\% of the Kleinman at al.'s list). No new pairs were found, although we did recover the polar (AM~Herculis system) ST\,LMi in a low state of accretion. With the larger sample the original situation reported ten years ago remains intact now at a much higher level of statistical significance: in the selected SDSS sample, high field magnetic white dwarfs are not found in an apparently-detached pairing with an M dwarf, unless they are a magnetic CV in a low state of accretion. This finding strengthens the case that the fields in the isolated high field magnetic white dwarfs are generated by stellar mergers but also raises questions on the nature of the progenitors of the magnetic CVs.Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    A quantitative analysis of the effects of chess instruction on the mathematics achievement of southern, rural, black secondary students

    This study investigates the effects of chess instruction on the mathematics achievement of a group of southern, rural, black, secondary students. Instruments used included the mathematics section of the CAT (Level 20), Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), Matrix Analogies Test-Short Form (MAT-SF), Guilford-Zimmerman Spatial Visualization Test (SV), and Guilford Zimmerman Spatial Orientation Test (SO). The treatment group, which received 18 weeks of chess instruction, consisted of 11 females and 8 males. The control group was comprised of 10 females and 10 males. All participants were high school juniors or seniors. Analysis of variance of the pre-tests found no significant differences between the treatment and control groups. Post-test data were analyzed by 2 x 2 MANCOVA which used statistically significant pre-tests as covariates. The treatment group scored significantly higher than the control group on post-test measures of mathematics achievement, F(1, 38) = 4.14, p3˘c.043;p \u3c .043; field dependence/independence, F(1, 38) = 6.02, p3˘c.019;p \u3c .019; spatial visualization, F(1, 38) = 14.13, p3˘c.001;p \u3c .001; and nonverbal reasoning, F(1, 38) = 6.09, p3˘c.037.p \u3c .037. The control group scored significantly higher on the spatial orientation test, F(1, 38) = 4.22, p3˘c.048.p \u3c .048. Further analysis by one-way ANCOVA found that only female members of the treatment group scored significantly higher on measures of mathematics achievement. Factor analysis extracted only one variable from the five instruments used in the study. This variable was labeled Spatially Based Cogntion (SBC). One-way ANCOVA of this extracted variable also found that only the treatment group females scored significantly higher than the control group females. No significant difference was found between the treatment group males and control group males for the extracted variable

    Effect of periodic backwash in the submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system

    The submerged membrane adsorption hybrid system (SMAHS) is an attractive solution in treating wastewater; however it faces membrane fouling although to a less extent. In this study, different adsorbents and resins were investigated in order to find a substitute to the powdered activated carbon (PAC); The effect of new backflush was also studied in further reducing the membrane fouling. The SMAHS led to 72–86% dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. A detailed study on the transmembrane pressure development led to a conclusion that there is a critical flux and this value is around 16 l/h.m2 for the wastewater studied

    Particle composition measurements during CLOUD7

    The chemical composition of >8 nm diameter aerosol was measured using the Timeof-Flight Thermal Desorption Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TOF-TDCIMS) during CLOUD7 particle nucleation experiments in Fall 2012 at the CLOUD chamber at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Sulfate dominated the negative ion particle spectra during all events with enough particle mass to observe, both in experiments with amine and alpha-pinene. Ammonium was also a major particle constituent during all observable events, though gaseous ammonia was present in the chamber only as a contaminant. During nucleation events following the oxidation of alpha-pinene, highly oxidized organic acids such as oxalic and oxoacetic acid were observed to be significant components of the collected aerosol

    Comparison of Alternative Safety Net Programs for the 2000 Farm Bill

    As Congress begins its debate for the 2002 farm bill, there have been calls for a counter cyclical safety net that will provide a better basis for targeting longer term planning than exists with ad hoc emergency assistance. Further subsidization of the multi-peril crop insurance (MPCI) program has been proposed, as well as reliance on a farm and ranch risk management (FARRM) account to help farmers. A whole farm revenue income support program and several variations of national income supplement programs have been put forward. A comprehensive analysis of different safety net alternatives using a common methodology is needed so farmers and policy makers can make objective comparisons. The objective of this paper is to quantitatively analyze the economic effects of alternative safety net/insurance programs on farmers in the Southern United States. The objective is accomplished by simulating representative crop farms in the South over the 2001-2005 planning horizon for alternative safety net options. The simulated net present value distributions for the farms are compared using certainty equivalents to determine the value of alternative safety net options to feed grain, cotton and rice farms in the South.Agricultural and Food Policy,
